I dreamt that I was hanging out with some friends at a party.
I looked up at the night sky and watched with horror as five stars winked out, all in a line, leaving behind an inky black void. Then they were coming back, flashing red first, five or six times, then turning steady green before returning to normal. The whole affair was like watching a giant cable modem coming on.
Terror spread through my bones as understanding began to sink in.
The universe had just rebooted.
We were in fact living in a virtual reality. The whole universe was a cosmic simulation of some sort in which us humans were nothing but a few lines of code.
I ran over to a friend and began shaking him by the collar. “Did you see that?! The universe just rebooted! Nothing is real! God is dead! We’re all going to die and it doesn’t matter!”
You see, in this dream I realized that while I loved being a philosophical nihilist, becoming a practical one was literally my worst nightmare.
