People fail. They kill, they rape, they are violent towards their children, they steal, they lie, they hate. They are cold, insensitive, unfair, unkind, miserable, shameful, hurtful, vile, and fragile. Sometimes they do evil things on purpose. Sometimes they make mistakes. Sometimes people are raised in evil and think it’s normal. Sometimes their brain is imbalanced or different.
We are all humans.
We like to pretend that we would never do or say those things we find so appalling. The things that turn our stomachs or break our hearts.
The truth is far more complicated. The truth is that for some people, it’s just easier to hide their vice. For some people, they think that the harm they are doing only affects them. It’s easy to tell yourself that while swinging the sword of social media justice.
When you say hateful things or dehumanize someone because they did a thing you didn’t like, even if it was really terrible, you are still allowing yourself to be filled with hate. You are still dehumanizing another person; and that is terrible… even if you think they deserve it.
We can’t fix the world by screaming or crying.
We can scream, we can cry – but then we need to get vulnerable and wade into this gross mess that we are a part of and start trying to fix it up. We need to start loving people, and let others love us too.
We need to be brutally honest, infinitely kind, unconditionally giving, gracefully just, and powerfully wise.
It’s not going to be easy, and we will definitely still fuck up. But we have to rise above the bullshit and the noise and start getting our hands dirty.
